How Do T Cells Recognize Antigens?
T cells recognize antigens through
T cell receptors (TCRs)
that bind to antigenic peptides presented by
Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC)
molecules on the surface of antigen-presenting cells (APCs). There are two types of MHC molecules:
-
MHC Class I
: Present on all nucleated cells and present antigens to cytotoxic T cells.
-
MHC Class II
: Found on professional APCs like dendritic cells, macrophages, and B cells, and present antigens to helper T cells.
