When an action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These neurotransmitters bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, causing ion channels to open. The influx of sodium (Na+) ions into the postsynaptic cell leads to depolarization of the membrane, producing an EPSP.
