Ion channels play a critical role in the generation of EPSPs. Ligand-gated ion channels, also known as ionotropic receptors, open in response to neurotransmitter binding. These channels are selective for specific ions, such as Na+ or calcium (Ca2+), and their opening results in the depolarization of the postsynaptic membrane.
