EPSPs are essential for synaptic transmission and neural communication. Multiple EPSPs can summate to reach the threshold potential required to generate an action potential in the postsynaptic neuron. This process, known as summation, can be temporal (occurring in quick succession) or spatial (originating from multiple synapses).
