What is the Histological Appearance of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM)?
LAM is characterized by the proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle cells, which can invade the lung parenchyma, blood vessels, and lymphatics. Histologically, LAM presents with cystic spaces lined by these smooth muscle cells. Immunohistochemical staining for markers such as HMB-45 and α-SMA (alpha-smooth muscle actin) is often used to confirm the diagnosis.
