The procedure is simple and involves several steps:
The patient is asked to fast for a few hours before the test. A baseline breath sample is collected. The patient drinks a urea solution labeled with a carbon isotope. After approximately 15-30 minutes, another breath sample is collected. The breath samples are analyzed for the presence of the carbon isotope-labeled CO2.
The results are usually available within a few hours to a couple of days.
