Platinum compounds bind to DNA and form intrastrand and interstrand cross-links. These cross-links prevent the DNA from unwinding, which is a necessary step for DNA replication and transcription. As a result, the cancer cells cannot proliferate and are directed towards pathways of apoptosis or programmed cell death.
