How is synaptic plasticity regulated in the hippocampus?
Synaptic plasticity, the ability of synapses to strengthen or weaken over time, is a fundamental property of the hippocampal circuitry. Two primary forms of synaptic plasticity are observed:
1. Long-Term Potentiation (LTP): A long-lasting increase in synaptic strength, often studied in the CA3-CA1 synapse, is thought to underlie learning and memory. 2. Long-Term Depression (LTD): A long-lasting decrease in synaptic strength, which also plays a role in memory and learning by fine-tuning synaptic connections.
