Brown fat, also known as brown adipose tissue (BAT), is a specialized form of fat tissue that is primarily involved in thermogenesis, the process of heat production in organisms. Unlike white fat, which stores energy, brown fat burns energy to generate heat. This type of adipose tissue is rich in mitochondria, giving it a brownish color due to the presence of iron-containing cytochromes.
