What is the Functional Role of the Granular Component?
The primary function of the GC is to facilitate the final steps in the assembly of the ribosomal subunits. After rRNA is transcribed and processed in the dense fibrillar component, it is combined with ribosomal proteins in the granular component to form pre-ribosomal particles. These particles undergo further maturation and are then transported to the cytoplasm, where they contribute to the formation of functional ribosomes.
