Mononucleosis, often referred to as "mono" or the "kissing disease," is an infectious illness typically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It predominantly affects adolescents and young adults, but it can occur at any age. Histologically, this condition is characterized by a marked increase in a specific type of white blood cells known as lymphocytes.
