Kernicterus is a type of brain damage that occurs in some newborns with severe jaundice. It is caused by the accumulation of unconjugated bilirubin in the brain tissues. Bilirubin, a yellow pigment, is a byproduct of the normal breakdown of red blood cells. High levels of unconjugated bilirubin can be toxic to brain tissues if not adequately managed.
