What are the Characteristics of the Stratum Granulosum?
The stratum granulosum typically consists of three to five layers of flattened keratinocytes. These keratinocytes contain dense basophilic granules known as keratohyalin granules, which play a significant role in keratinization. The cells in this layer also begin to lose their nuclei and organelles as they move towards the surface, a process that contributes to the formation of the stratum corneum.
