In addition to their role in immunity, macrophages are involved in tissue repair and homeostasis. After the resolution of an infection, macrophages clear dead cells and remodel tissue. They secrete growth factors and cytokines that promote angiogenesis, extracellular matrix deposition, and the proliferation of fibroblasts, aiding in tissue regeneration.
