What is the Histological Appearance of Macrophages?
Under the microscope, macrophages appear as large, irregularly-shaped cells with abundant cytoplasm. They contain numerous lysosomes and phagosomes, which can be visualized using special staining techniques. The nucleus is often oval or kidney-shaped. Macrophages can be identified by specific markers such as CD68 and F4/80 in immunohistochemical staining.
