When red blood cells are destroyed, either due to hemorrhage or hemolysis, the hemoglobin within them is released and broken down by macrophages. The iron from hemoglobin is stored as ferritin or converted into hemosiderin within the macrophages. Hemosiderin is less soluble than ferritin, making it an important storage form of iron in conditions of iron overload.
