Under a light microscope, hemosiderin laden macrophages appear as large cells with granular, brownish pigment within their cytoplasm. Special staining techniques, such as Prussian blue stain, can be used to specifically identify hemosiderin, which will stain blue, making it easier to distinguish from other pigments.
