What is the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP)?
The senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) is a hallmark of senescent cells. It involves the secretion of various inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and proteases. SASP factors can reinforce the senescent state, modulate the tissue microenvironment, and impact neighboring cells. While SASP can have beneficial roles in wound healing and tissue repair, chronic SASP activity is associated with aging and age-related diseases, promoting a state of chronic inflammation known as inflammaging.
