What is the Role of NIS in Thyroid Hormone Synthesis?
NIS facilitates the uptake of iodide, which is a vital component in the production of thyroid hormones - thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Once iodide is transported into the thyroid follicular cells, it is oxidized and incorporated into the amino acid tyrosine within the protein thyroglobulin. This iodination process eventually leads to the formation of T4 and T3.
