Mutations or dysfunctions in the NIS gene can lead to congenital hypothyroidism, characterized by low levels of thyroid hormones due to impaired iodide uptake. This condition can result in growth retardation, developmental delays, and metabolic issues if not treated. Additionally, the NIS is a target for certain therapies in thyroid cancer treatment, where radioiodine is used to ablate remnant thyroid tissue or metastatic cells.
