In histology, the presence of 3β-HSD can be used as a marker for identifying steroidogenic cells. For instance, within the adrenal cortex, different zones express varying levels of 3β-HSD, which helps in distinguishing the zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, and zona reticularis. Similarly, in the gonads, 3β-HSD expression can help identify Leydig cells in the testes and theca cells in the ovaries.
