What is the Function of Transitional Epithelium in the Renal Pelvis?
The transitional epithelium in the renal pelvis has multiple functions. It provides a barrier to protect underlying tissues from the toxic effects of urine. Additionally, it is capable of significant distension, allowing the renal pelvis to accommodate varying amounts of urine without rupturing. The epithelium's ability to contract and expand also assists in propelling urine into the ureter.
