foreign body giant cells

What is the Function of Foreign Body Giant Cells?

The primary function of FBGCs is to isolate and attempt to degrade foreign materials that are too large to be phagocytosed by a single macrophage. By surrounding and sequestering these materials, FBGCs help to prevent the spread of potentially harmful substances within the tissue. They also release a variety of enzymes and reactive oxygen species in an attempt to break down the foreign material.
