NeuN is a nuclear protein that is predominantly found in post-mitotic neurons. Discovered in the early 1990s, NeuN has become a widely used marker due to its specificity and reliability. It is expressed in the nuclei and perinuclear cytoplasm of most neuron types, barring certain exceptions such as Purkinje cells and some cerebellar neurons.
