Annexin V is a protein that binds to phosphatidylserine, which translocates from the inner leaflet to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane early in apoptosis. By conjugating Annexin V with a fluorescent dye, apoptotic cells can be identified and quantified using flow cytometry or fluorescence microscopy.
