DNA fragmentation is a hallmark of apoptosis. This can be detected by agarose gel electrophoresis, where fragmented DNA appears as a "ladder" pattern. Alternatively, DNA fragmentation can be analyzed using flow cytometry after cell permeabilization and incorporation of a DNA-binding dye.
