What histological changes are seen with drug abuse?
Drug abuse can result in a variety of histological alterations. For instance, chronic use of opioids can cause liver damage, evident as hepatocyte ballooning and fibrosis. Long-term use of methamphetamine may lead to neuronal damage, with histological features including axonal degeneration and gliosis. Cocaine abuse can cause cardiac tissues to show signs of ischemia, such as myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis.
