What are the functions of the different skin layers?
Each layer of the skin has specific functions that contribute to the overall role of the skin:
Epidermis: Acts as a barrier against pathogens, UV radiation, and water loss. It also participates in the synthesis of vitamin D and houses cells involved in immune responses. Dermis: Provides mechanical strength, elasticity, and houses structures like hair follicles and glands. It also plays a role in thermoregulation and sensation. Hypodermis: Insulates the body, absorbs shocks, and stores energy. It also anchors the skin to underlying structures.
