There are several types of thyroiditis, each with distinct histological features:
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: This is the most common form of thyroiditis, characterized by lymphocytic infiltration and the presence of germinal centers. De Quervain's Thyroiditis: Also known as subacute granulomatous thyroiditis, this type shows granulomatous inflammation and multinucleated giant cells. Postpartum Thyroiditis: Occurs in some women after childbirth and typically shows lymphocytic infiltration similar to Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Riedel's Thyroiditis: A rare form characterized by extensive fibrosis that can replace normal thyroid tissue.
