Several challenges impede CNS regeneration. The formation of a glial scar, although protective, creates a physical and chemical barrier to axonal growth. Additionally, the extracellular matrix in the CNS contains inhibitory molecules that restrict regeneration. Overcoming these barriers is a significant focus of current research.
