Osteocytes are mature bone cells housed within small cavities called lacunae. They maintain the bone matrix and communicate with other osteocytes through tiny channels called canaliculi. These canaliculi allow the exchange of nutrients and waste products between the blood vessels in the Haversian canal and the osteocytes.
