Complex permanent tissues consist of more than one type of cell working together as a unit. The two primary complex tissues are:
- Xylem: Responsible for the conduction of water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant. Xylem consists of tracheids, vessels, xylem fibers, and xylem parenchyma. - Phloem: Responsible for the transport of nutrients and organic compounds. Phloem consists of sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem fibers, and phloem parenchyma.
