How Do Type I and Type II Fibers Differ Structurally?
Structurally, Type I and Type II fibers can be distinguished by their histological appearance under a microscope:
- Type I fibers: These fibers appear smaller in diameter and have a higher density of mitochondria. They also stain darker due to their higher myoglobin content. - Type II fibers: These fibers appear larger in diameter with fewer mitochondria and a lower myoglobin content. They stain lighter compared to Type I fibers.
