Bone tissue is organized into structural units called osteons or Haversian systems in compact bone. Each osteon consists of concentric layers of bone matrix called lamellae surrounding a central canal, known as the Haversian canal, which contains blood vessels and nerves. The lamellae are interconnected by tiny channels called canaliculi that facilitate the exchange of nutrients and waste products.
