amyloid precursor protein (app)

How is APP Processed?

APP can be processed through two main pathways:
Amyloidogenic Pathway: This pathway involves the cleavage of APP by beta-secretase followed by gamma-secretase, resulting in the production of beta-amyloid peptides (Aβ). These peptides can aggregate to form amyloid plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.
Non-amyloidogenic Pathway: In this pathway, APP is first cleaved by alpha-secretase within the Aβ region, precluding the formation of beta-amyloid. The subsequent cleavage by gamma-secretase produces harmless peptide fragments.
