Connective tissue provides structural and metabolic support. It consists of a variety of cells embedded in an extracellular matrix composed of protein fibers (such as collagen and elastin) and ground substance. Examples include bone, cartilage, adipose tissue, and blood. These tissues support organs, store energy, and transport nutrients and waste products.
