The HPA axis functions through a series of hormonal signals. The hypothalamus releases CRH, which stimulates the anterior pituitary to secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH then acts on the adrenal cortex, prompting the release of cortisol. Cortisol, in turn, exerts negative feedback on both the hypothalamus and the pituitary to regulate the system.
