Muscle spindles are sensory receptors located within the muscle fibers. They are composed of intrafusal fibers that are enveloped by a capsule and are distinct from the surrounding extrafusal muscle fibers responsible for contraction. The spindles contain sensory nerve endings that detect changes in muscle length. When a muscle stretches, these sensory nerves become activated and send signals via afferent neurons to the spinal cord.
