Calicoblasts utilize a combination of biological and chemical processes to secrete calcium carbonate. They actively transport calcium ions from seawater into intracellular compartments where these ions are combined with carbonate ions to form calcium carbonate. This compound is then excreted extracellularly to form the skeleton.
