Cohesin is primarily located in the cell nucleus, where it associates with chromosomes. During the cell cycle, cohesin's localization changes. In the G1 phase, it is loaded onto chromosomes, and its binding is stabilized by proteins known as cohesin loading factors. During the S phase, cohesin establishes strong cohesion between sister chromatids as DNA is replicated.
