The liver is uniquely equipped with the necessary enzymes for this process, which are not found in significant amounts in other tissues. The liver lacks the enzyme thiophorase, which is required to utilize ketone bodies for energy, so the ketone bodies are exported to other tissues such as the brain and muscle for use.
