Structurally, myelinated nerve fibers consist of alternating segments of myelin sheath and nodes of Ranvier. The myelin sheath is composed of multiple layers of membrane rich in lipids and proteins, which provide insulation. The nodes of Ranvier are small gaps between the myelinated segments where the axon membrane is exposed.
