The myelin sheath is produced by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS). Schwann cells wrap around the axon in a spiral fashion, while oligodendrocytes extend their processes to multiple axons, forming segments of myelin sheath.
