The primary function of megakaryocytes is to produce and release platelets into the bloodstream. Platelets are small, anucleate cell fragments that play a critical role in blood clotting and wound healing. Megakaryocytes extend cytoplasmic processes called proplatelets into the bone marrow sinusoids, where they fragment to release platelets.
