LKB1 functions mainly as a master kinase, activating a group of at least 14 other kinases, including AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). These kinases are involved in regulating cell metabolism, growth, and polarity. By activating AMPK, LKB1 helps maintain energy balance within the cell, especially under conditions of metabolic stress.
