What is the Difference Between Apoptosis and Necrosis Induced by Death Ligands?
Apoptosis is a programmed cell death mechanism that involves cell shrinkage, DNA fragmentation, and formation of apoptotic bodies, which are then phagocytosed by neighboring cells. This process is generally non-inflammatory. In contrast, necrosis is a form of traumatic cell death resulting from acute cellular injury, leading to cell swelling, membrane rupture, and inflammation. While death ligands typically induce apoptosis, certain conditions such as high ligand concentrations or specific cellular contexts can lead to necrosis.
