Telomerase is an essential ribonucleoprotein enzyme that adds telomere repeats to the ends of chromosomes, thereby counteracting telomere shortening. This enzyme is particularly active in stem cells, germ cells, and cancer cells, but its activity is limited in most somatic cells.
