Primase is an essential enzyme involved in the DNA replication process. It synthesizes short RNA primers that serve as starting points for DNA synthesis. These primers are necessary because DNA polymerases, the enzymes responsible for adding nucleotides to a growing DNA strand, cannot initiate synthesis de novo; they can only add nucleotides to an existing strand.
