Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (NRDS), also known as Hyaline Membrane Disease, is a condition primarily seen in premature infants. It occurs due to the underdevelopment of the lungs and a deficiency in a critical substance called surfactant. Surfactant reduces the surface tension within the alveoli, preventing their collapse and facilitating efficient gas exchange.
