Metaphase is one of the key stages of mitosis, a critical process in the cell division cycle that results in the formation of two daughter cells from a single parent cell. During metaphase, the chromosomes align themselves in the middle of the cell, known as the metaphase plate, in preparation for segregation into daughter cells.
